Game / Juego

This game is played in many Latin American countries. The children sit in a circle on the floor. Each child has a pen or stick that he/she passes to the right while reciting the rhyme below. The children keep the rhythm as they pick up another stick to pass on. On each beat, the children bang down a pen on the floor to the right near his/her neighbor. The children then pick up a new pen from the left. When they say “triqui” the first time, the children bang the pen or stick on the floor on their right. When they say “triqui” the second time, they grab the pen or stick on their left. When they say “Tron”, they pass stick to the right. Anyone who breaks the rhythm is eliminated until only one player is left.

One elephant went out to play


One elephant went out to play,
Upon a spider’s web one day.
He had such enormous fun,
That he called for another elephant to come!

2, 3, 4, 5…

Or as a group action song:

Description: All children sit in a circle on the floor. One child gets up and imitates an elephant with one arm dangling like a trunk, and the other arm dangling behind like a tail. The child then skips around the circle while everyone sings:

One elephant went out one day,
Upon a spiders web to play,
He / she had such tremendous fun,
That he called for another elephant to come.

The child then picks a friend to come and join him/her. The friend stands behind the first child in the same position holding hands, as if they are elephants in the circus. Everyone then continue to sing as the two elephants skip around them:

Two elephants went out one day,
Upon a spiders web to play,
They had such tremendous fun,
That they called for another elephant to come.

This continues with each new elephant picking a friend until everyone is up. Then everyone sings for example:

Five elephants went out one day,
Upon a spiders web to play,
They had such tremendous fun,
But the web it broke and they all fell down.
Everyone then falls to the floor.

One potato, two potato



One potato, two potato, three potato, four!
Well, I made a batch of hot potatoes
(bend forward and stir as in a big pot)
Dropped ’em on the floor!!
(look shocked, and put hands on face in surprise)

Five potato, six potato, seven potato, eight!
So I stomped ’em into mashed potatoes
(stomp feet while walking forward a few steps and then back)
And plopped ’em on a plate
(hands out like plopping potatoes on a plate!)

Nine potato, ten potato, can’t believe my eyes!
(cover and uncover eyes in surprise)
The children ate ’em up and now they want some french fries!!!
(Say to children “how many?” and march with swinging arms and stomping feet while counting…)
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 fries!
(jump up and reach over head to sky on 10)
“Again??”
Do the count again, faster and a third time even faster then plop back down to sitting after the last 10.
